100 kW AWE SYSTEM

Alkaline water electrolyser developed in collaboration with Rivan Industries.
A UK-based start-up building vertically integrated, modular synthetic fuel plants powered by off-grid solar to produce synthetic natural gas via. electrolysis, direct-air capture and methanation.

SSR Engineering supported Rivan Industries in their alkaline electrolyser stack development and co-built the in-house test platform, which evolved into the 100 kW pilot deployed on-site.

The objective was to design a 100 kW AWE system targeting £1/kg H2 and a balance-of-plant capable of pushing the stack to its limits.

  • Early stage R&D and stack design

  • Gasket fabrication for iterative testing

  • Rig design, CAD and fabrication

  • Control system architecture

  • Performance and durability testing

  • BoP validation for media suitability

  • Thermal and fluid management analysis

  • HAZOP and safety review

RIVAN TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Rivan designs, manufactures and deploys modular synthetic-fuel plants that pair an alkaline electrolyser (H2) and calcium-looping direct air capture unit (CO2), feeding their reactor engineered to GS(M)R gas-quality specifications to produce 99% pure methane, powered by low-cost solar electricity.

The resulting synthetic natural gas is a chemically identical, drop‑in replacement that can be injected into today’s UK gas grid and used by existing industrial equipment without modification. Containerised, field‑deployable modules shorten installation timelines and are designed around UK grid requirements for rapid interconnection and commissioning.
